Family Winter Memories 2017

Hey, Readers!

It has been a while since I have shared some of the memories my family experienced during the beautiful seasons we experience here in Canada’s capital. Now that winter is about to make way for spring in just a few days, I thought I would let your in on some of our favourite moments of winter.

Christmas held many fun memories for our family, but there is more to winter than the holiday season. It is about getting out and enjoying what this frozen season brings.

My other half dragged my butt away from my laptop on many occasions to get out for a run. It snowed on most days we tied up our runners to hit the trails. Though the white fluffy stuff made this workout a bit challenging to pull off, we were thankful for our shades and (somewhat) cleared paths to trek along. The best part about the snow was that it made the scenery around us beautiful, allowing us to marvel at the views around us.

As the snow piled up in here in Ottawa, we were able to spend some fun times in our backyard oasis. The VPs had a ball marching around (because the snow was as high as my knee at times), flopping about and playing with snowballs together.

While the VPs were outside, I decided to have a bit of fun, too! I began embracing being in front of the lens more often. I used a handy tool to give me an assist to make some of these shots happen.

The sun decided to smile on us many times this winter, giving us some unusually warm days. We got the VPs outside to hit the neighbourhood sledding hill. They loved racing down the hill on their sleds and could have stayed there all day long.

There were also times we ventured away from our neighbourhood to take in winter in downtown Ottawa. I took the VP of Cuteness ice skating for the first time at City Hall and she did not want to get off of them.

We also took in Winterlude and some of the other sites while we were strolling around the area. I was even able to snap a shot of my eldest on our way home. The snow covering objects and buildings gave the city a sense of beauty that only happens at this time of the year.

I tried to capture a bit of the gorgeousness of the season. With the temperatures rising and plunging so often this winter, nature decided to show off what it could do leaving some amazing scenes to snap shots of. I have to admit, the frozen fish shot still makes me laugh whenever I see it.

This winter was full of fun and surprises. The thermometer dipped and soared, and with the VPs being a bit older, they got to experience winter more on their own. Though throwing, sledding, and skating make for fun times, we are all on pins and needles waiting for the ice and snow to recede, allowing for the first buds of spring to appear. I can’t wait to be able to show you what my family gets into when this season (finally) appears! Thanks for the fun times and the sweet memories, winter!

  1. Being from the south, we don’t get snow…and very very little cold weather. I think we’ve only had the heat on one day this winter. I usually spend February and March in Upstate NY. That gets my snow fix covered. This year, due to family emergencies, I’m spent Jan. Feb. and March in North and Central Florida. Oh how I have missed winter outdoor activities.Maybe Next year I’ll be in Idaho for some cold weather and snow.

    1. Sorry you did not get to enjoy the snow this winter, Elizabeth. πŸ™ I only winters with snow. The one time I was in a warm climate during winter was when I was visiting family in Memphis. It was a weird to be waling around in lighter clothing. I hope you do make it to Idaho next winter!

  4. What a fabulous winter you had! Your kids are so cute!! I am so proud of you that you went running in the snow! I’m a woose and only run in the nice weather (read spring and fall)! I work outdoors during the day, so I hide from winter! My fav winter moment this year was sledding with my kids!

    1. Thanks, Jennifer! I love working outdoors when the weather is nice as well. Going for runs in the snow were my other half’s idea, and I was dragging myself home. Sledding was one of my fav moments as well!

I like the 150 ice sculpture. I have heard that Canada is celebrating their 150th this year, which is super cool. I like all of your photos. Looks like a great time!

    1. Thanks, Melanie! Yes, we’re celebrating this milestone all year long. That sculpture was amazing! I hope it it was somehow kept intact after the festival ended.

Aw so much fun for your family this winter! We used to live where there are 4 seasons; now we are in California we don’t get any snow. I wish my children would get the chance to play with snow at least for a couple of winters growing up! I miss making snowballs and building snowman πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks, The Terrific Five! For me, winter would not be the same without snow. Both of my kids love snow and could be outside in it all day. I hope your kids will have the chance to play in snow, too

  7. Loved all the photos. Looks like you all had a wonderful time enjoying the last of winter!

    1. Thanks, Extreme Couponing Mom! We love playing in winter, but we are also itching to get spring going!

  8. We have had very little snow this year. Looking at your photos made me realize that maybe I do actually like it a little bit! LOL Great job getting in front of the camera more. I definitely struggle with this and need to make it a point to be in photos, too.

    1. Thanks, Kristy! Snow can be really beautiful. It is hard to be in front of the camera as I always worry about what I look like. I also realized that I should be in more photos, especially with my kids so there are more memories of us rogether

  9. As much as I hate the Canadian winter, the cold, and the snow, these photos are gorgeous and tell a great story!

    1. Thanks, Bites for Foodies! I think great photography is about putting a story into every shot. I’m still working out the kinks of taking beautiful photos. My kids and nature gave the beauty to these shots

  10. Debra Hawkins says:

These winter photos are absolutely amazing, it almost makes me want another snowfall….. almost! I can’t lie, I am a little over the snow, I am so ready for spring but I am so glad you had a beautiful winter. These pictures are simply gorgeous!

    1. Thanks so much, Debra! We’re still in a lot of snow here. I am now getting itchy for spring to arrive

  11. What a great post. It gives a whole new perspective to the winter season plus it doesn’t hurt that you live in a gorgeous place. My favorite part of winter is the relaxation. I stopped gift giving and instead enjoy quality time hanging out with friends and family. It slows things down and I love it. Plus, I work out more in the winter. Gyms are slower so I get more free space.

    1. Thanks, Allison! Winters can be gorgeous here in Ottawa, but it can also be super cold! I hear you about working out at the gym in the winter. You’d think it would be more crowded because it is cold outside

    2. reesespeaks says:

Thanks, Katie! The thought of a “green winter” would be weird for me. I have never been through a winter where no snow fell. It would be an interesting experience!

  14. Winter has been awesome for us because we haven’t had ANY snow. Though I missed out on Christmas with my family, I’ve been in a better mood all season!

  15. From the looks of all your fun pictures looks like you had a very busy winter. Making memories and having fun in all that snow. Enjoy the arrival of Spring.
