Using Your Smarts is Fun with The Three Witty Goats Gruff – Review
Disclaimer: I received a copy of The Three Witty Goats Gruff in order to write this review. I am honestly sharing what my VPs and I thought of this book.
Brains over brawn. This is concept is one that is easily overlooked in today’s world. I love when children are encouraged to think their way out of a problem, especially when my VPs are reading. Lora Rozler is an educator who writes clever books for young readers to learn from and enjoy. My VPs are beginning to learn how amazing reading can be. Lora asked if her clever book The Three Witty Goats Gruff would help them learn to be smart and have fun while they learned.
Witty? Isn’t it not Billy?
Lora decided to create a bit of a fanciful take to this popular tale. The three goats are siblings who want to go to a grassy field to literally enjoy greener pastures. The problem – a greedy old troll is blocking their path across the bridge to reach the field. These clever siblings devise a plan to get past the troll into letting each of them pass him to get to the pasture and they succeed.
Takeaways from this tale
The VPs and I took away a few things after reading this book. One of them was seeing they could work together as a team to achieve a goal. Another great lesson was that there is a solution to any problem should they put their minds to it. A third moral the VPs picked up on from this book was that violence does not have to solve every conflict.
Why we’re loving this story
There are so many reasons why we are loving The Three Witty Goats Gruff. Speaking from the parent part of me, I loved the lessons the VPs learned from this book. With two strong-willed minds, there are times when the VPs do not agree on issues. This story shows them how successful they can be when they work together.
Seeing that a problem can be solved without violence makes me love this book. In a world where we are surrounded with people using their might over their minds, it was breath of fresh air. Reading a book that shares the power of your mind to overcome adversity is one I am so willing to gush over and share with my VPs and my friends.
The illustrations also helped my VPs stay tuned in to this book. From cover to cover, we smiled at how cute the goat siblings are depicted. We even think the greedy troll is grumpily adorable! This cute and clever tale is truly a joy to look at.
The goat siblings are not the only witty part of this book. When words are combined in a way that make them fun to read, readers want to flip the book over to hear them again. This is how we feel about the vocabulary used in The Three Witty Goats Gruff. Lora used the magic and power of words to describe the troll and the goats in various ways. Children learn from this method and start to do it themselves.
