Reese’s Fishing Adventure, 2013

Hey Readers!

Here in Ottawa, it is going to be a balmy -20°C, and I am LONGING for those warm, lazy days of summer.  Then the dusty ol’ light bulb flicked on in my head, and I remembered that I had forgotten all about my latest battle of wits versus the fish while I was visiting my boyfriend/partner’s parent’s home last summer, and I was transported back to that day on the boat.  Sure, I was sweating like crazy in my sweater to keep the mosquitoes at bay while wearing enough bug repellant to cover three people, but I enjoyed every minute on that boat!

On this trip, it was the same gang as last time, except my boyfriend/partner stayed behind to be with our little ones.  We all but duck taped my eldest daughter to her seat, as she loves going fishing, as is getting better at it each time she goes out.  Granndpa was at the helm of the boat, guiding us along the Napanee River that flows just minutes away from his home, and taking us to the prime fishing spots along the way.

Below are some shots of the scenery we had a chance to experience on our way to our first fishing spot.  There were some other fishing crews out on the river, too, trying to see if the fish were biting but  Grandpa was able to shake them off of our trail!

These are just some of the beautiful pics of scenery we had the advantage of being out on the Napanee River last summer. This is not helping me deal with this freezing cold weather!

Some of our casts were successful…

while others were not.

We even had a few friends drop in for a visit.

Dragonflies are some of my favourite flying beings. They are inspiring, and are a sign of positive change. I guess my Lady Luck will smile down on me to get some fish!

Overall, it was a fabulous few hours fishing.  I am by no means the seasoned angler I want to be, but I am getting closer to this goal every time I cast my line!  I have to make a point to catch more than my fish-crazed daughter next time, or else I’ll hear the end of it!

Can’t wait for my trip this year!  I hope you enjoyed this little bit of summer, if only on your computer screen!  🙂

Until my next post, Readers!

Reese’s Christmas Holidays Wrap-Up, 2013

Hey Readers!

I am so sad to see the Christmas holidays go by so quickly this past year.  I love that time of year.  Snow everywhere, lights decorating homes,  trees sprinkled with all kinds of ornaments, and people celebrating the season in so many different ways.

For my family, this was the first Christmas where my youngest two children, age two and one, were going to get to really have fun with the season now that they can both walk, eat and rip presents open pretty much on their own.  I wanted to share some of the fun we had this holiday season with you, Readers!

Christmas Eve There's my little girl watching Google's Santa tracker as he was getting closer to our house. Those were the snacks we left out for the Big Guy to thank him for leaving us gifts! I have to thank my friend, Sandy, for the great shortbread cookie recipe!

Merry Christmas! Santa did indeed visit our house! You can tell by all of the gifts under the tree (our tree is half decorated because our kids like playing with the decorations), and by all of the eaten treats! There are my little ones opening up their stockings and gifts after breakfast. It was a crazy day!

New Year's Eve Well, it was a fun New Year's Eve had at my house, even though my eldest daughter and I were the only ones who made it to midnight! To celebrate the occasion, my eldest and I tried out a new vanilla cake recipe to make cupcakes. MY boyfriend/partner person took our Christmas tree out of its misery by relieving it of its duties a few hours early. Those needles were just a fraction of what fell off over the past few weeks since we had it up. Those were the headbands my eldest and I wore to get ourselves in the spirit of NYE, along with our outfits! Those pics were taken just minutes before midnight.

My Favourite Christmas Movies – The Reese Edition

Hiya, Readers,

Some of you may have read my post entitled My Favourite Christmas Movies/TV Specials – Family Edition.  I did that one for those of you with families who wanted ideas of what to watch with your kids to get into the Christmas spirit.  The Reese  Edition is for those Christmas movies that may not be kid friendly for one reason or another (intense scenes, violence, language, nudity, etc) but I do love watching them at this time of the year:

Scrooge (A Christmas Carol – 1951)

This has to be one of my favourite no-Muppet versions of this Charles Dickens tale.  I love how Alastair Sims portrayed  Ebenezer Scrooge in this film.  He was amazing!

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

I know, I mentioned the first Home Alone in my other post about my favourite  Family Christmas movies to watch, but I love this sequel if the original film.  Sure, it’s some of the same gags, but it was still funny!  The best scene has to be the Angel with Even Filthier Souls bit. I’ll watch this one anytime! (You’ll notice the link is mislabeled, sorry about that!)

Love Actually (2003)

This Rom-Com Christmas flick is a favourite of mine because it has to have one of the best casts I’ve seen in a long time!  The stories of many of the characters make me want to laugh and cheer for their happiness, too!  Of course, Bill Nighy, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth stole the scenes they had lines in!

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

I had to leave this one for the end of my post because this one is simply a Christmas classic!  If I don’t see this one during the Christmas season, I really get upset.  It’s also my favourite of the classic National Lampoon series of movies.  All of the characters are crazy in one way or another, and no one could have pulled off being Clark “Sparky” Griswold better than Chevy Chase.

I know there are only a few more sleeps ’til Christmas, Readers, but if you haven’t had a chance to watch any of these movies, I implore you to do so!  Whether you watch them with loved ones or by yourself, I will guarantee you will have a good time!

Until my next post, Readers!

My Favourite Christmas Movies/TV Specials – Family Edition

Hey Readers!

I LOVE Christmas, and just about everything that goes along with it: putting up the tree, decorating the house, baking with my kids, etc.  Another  Christmas tradition I love is  having some family time watching some of my favourite Christmas movies and TV specials.  I have been doing this since I was little, and now, my kids love watching these  Here is a list of my absolute favourite ones (I couldn’t put them in order, as I like them all so much):

A Charlie Brown Christmas – I love this holiday special because it’s classic Charlie Brown trying to do right, yet goofing up along the way.  Oh, and The Vince Guaraldi Trio playing the score behind this special gets my family and I moving and grooving!  We also listen to the soundtrack of this TV special for part of Christmas Day every year while making breakfast.  Yeah, we love it THAT much!

The Grinch That Stole Christmas – Oh, how I love the Grinch!  Dr. Seuss’ adaptation from the popular Christmas story T’was The Night Before Christmas is loved by everyone in my household.  I think it is because The Grinch does all of these bad things to the residents in Whoville, then redeems himself at the end.  Well, it is also has to do with the amazing job Dr. Seuss did with rewriting this tale, too!  It’s ingenious!

Home Alone – Ah, the only non-animated feature of the bunch, but man, is it an awesome flick!  It’s great seeing this clever 8 year-old boy take on two not-so bright burglars with things around his home while he was mistakenly left, well, home alone.  The soundtrack is great, too!  We love the sequel of this film, too, but if I can only pick 1 film from this franchise, it would have to be the original!

Garfield Christmas – This Christmas special is so dear to my family’s heart.  It had everything: slap-stick comedy, music, and a bit of drama (tears begin to weld when Grandma is talking about her  husband).   It’s a great one for the family to watch.

Muppet Christmas Carol – Out of all of the versions of A Christmas Carol that have been made over the years, no one did like Jim Henson sis it! This Christmas movie is perfect for parents and kids alike because it’s funny, thought-provoking, and it’s a musical done in their Muppet way!  It also gets kids asking about the Charles Dickens classical novel it’s based on, and  it brings back so many nostalgic memories for parents as well to share with their kids.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Rankin-Bass/Classic Media version) – I had to save this one for last because this is the show people think of when they think of Christmas specials.  It may look a bit kooky or creepy at times, but man, it doesn’t cease to entertain audiences.  This special will be hitting it’s 50th birthday next year, so another special edition will probably be available to buy (which I will).  It’s one of the few Christmas specials that shows Santa as a normal man who complains about life, and can be wrong about those around him.  I even love the Abominable Snow Monster! He used to be scary, but he’s just funny to me now!

I can (and have) watched all of these shows/movies any time of the year!  I hope my short list gives you ideas as to how to get you and your family into the Christmas spirit this year!

Until my next post, Readers!

Reese’s Halloween, 2013!

Halloooooo Readers!

My family loves Halloween!  Since my little ones are a bit older to enjoy the day a bit better, we decided to get everyone involved in the preparations for Halloween, 2013!

As you can see in the first collage, we were preparing our main jack-o-lantern.  My partner/boyfriend wanted it to have the face of Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas, so he found the template, and hacked away.  We got our youngest daughter to help separate the pumpkin seeds from the rest of the pumpkin insides.  She was very meticulous about this job.  As you can see, our little guy was hard at work…well, maybe he’ll help out more next year!  And there is our jack-o-lantern! I think my resident artist did a fabulous job!

Pumpkin Carving 2013

In this collage, I put together some of the pics from Halloween Night at our house.  You can see my oldest went as some form of secret agent, while our youngest daughter was suppose to be a pumpkin, but in true diva fashion, she refused to wear it, so she was some sort of bear (It was all in her hat).  Luckily, she’s young and cute, so she got away with it this year!  This was also her first year trick-or-treating.  The thing with the bat on it is her candy bag.  She liked getting the candy, but she loved giving it away even more!  I had to stop her from giving away too much candy. The little tike was Scooby Doo this year. Taking a page out of his older sister’s playbook, he chose not to wear his SCooby Doo hat that had Scooby’s head on it.  Nonetheless, he was very cute!  Those were our jack-o-lanterns on our porch.  Time got away from us this year, so we only had 2 of them.  Next year, we want to have one for each of us (5 in total), as well as doing more work on the porch.  That fuzzy jack-o-lantern hat was covering the candy bowl, so the little ones wouldn’t get into it.  Last, but certainly not least, that was my oldest daughter’s haul from trick-or-treating!  She literally had a pillow case full of treats!  She went out with her friend, and she will have enough candy for a VERY long time!

Halloween Night 2013

Overall, we had a good time this Halloween.  As usual, it went by too quickly.  🙁

Next stop on the celebration trail: Christmas! It’s my absolute favourite time of year!  I can’t wait!

Until my next post, Readers!

Reese’s Thanksgiving in Canada’s Captial

Hey Readers!

For those of you that didn’t know, I’m Canadian.  For us Canadians, it was our Thanksgiving weekend.  I had my mom, one of my nieces and one of my nephews come to visit me in the Capital (Ottawa) to celebrate.  Here are some pics showing what this Thanksgiving was like for me this year!

My eldest daughter and I started the day off with a late morning bike ride.  Since we gave her a new bike for her birthday, the two of us decided to let her break it in.  We rode along the Rideau Canal Western Pathway.

It is so pretty all-year round, so I couldn’t help but to take pics during our ride.  We passed certain stops such as Brown’s Inlet

These ducks met us at our first of many stops along our bike ride that morning.

After our ride, I then turned around, and took the kids outside for a while so my mom and my boyfriend/partner could get some time to cook and some peace and quiet.

To give my mom and our chef (my boyfriend/partner) a break from a house full of kids, I took them out for a long walk to try and tucker them out. It was one of the quietest evenings all weekend!

Since I didn’t take them out long enough, we went over to one of the many parks in my area to try and burn even more of their energy.

Then we finally got to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner!  Let me tell you, Readers, my man can cook!  Everything was so good!  Thanks, Chef Boyfriend/Partner!

Well, Readers, that was Thanksgiving, 2013 at the Reese Residence in Canada’s capital!  It was fun and delicious, and it was good to see a part of my family for a few days.  Can’t wait to go home to Toronto and do all of this there!

Until my next post, Readers!

Reese’s Big Fishing Adventure!

Hey Readers!

Fishing.  For some people, it is the ultimate past time.  For a born and bred city girl like myself, it seemed as though it was a day spent in a boat surrounded by swarms of killer bugs trying to catch this unattainable prize that is laughing at you for attempting to entice it with your rod and bait.   When the opportunity came for me to actually try fishing, I was a little apprehensive, yet it was an experience I had never tried.  So with my fishing rod in hand, and a sweater to aid my paranoia of insects, I boarded a boat with my oldest daughter, my boyfriend, and his father to take on this new challenge.

We are off in the boat to find a good fishing spot...can't wait to catch my first whopper!

This was not on my line, but we got one! Not bad for a first-timer, huh?!
This was not on my line, but we got one! Not bad for a first-timer, huh?!  Don’t worry, we caught and released it.

After we fished and fished some more, we realized it was getting late, turned the boat around, and headed for home.  I was able to see why people enjoyed fishing so much.  Whether you are alone or with a group of people you like hanging out with, it is a chance to take in nature right at the source.  We laughed at each other for loosing fish, or just being goofy.

It was a good time, and where the bugs were concerned, we were lucky because it was too early in the year for a lot of bugs to attack us.  Would I go fishing again?  Yes, I would.  I don’t think I’d go everyday, but it would be good to do once in a while.  Hopefully on my next fishing excursion, I’ll actually catch something!  If I do, I’ll let you know!

Until my next post, Readers!
